You may be or may not be one of those coaches who struggle a lot to find effective free soccer drills for the players, but I bet there are many of them. Actually what they are looking for are drills that can be performed by the kids all alone without any supervision.

The best way to kick-start the training sessions are to use soccer drills that do not require any equipment. You know why, because these soccer exercises are specifically designed to suit the player’s age , learning potential and the role he plays in the team.

The one drill that must be taught to all the players is to dribble the ball and at the same time be aware of what is going on around. This drill is used by many coaches and it is far better than asking your players to dribble through cones.

The players may find this particular drill rather demanding but it is this competitive nature of this drill that ensures player’s wholehearted participation in soccer practice.

Soccer Drills

Let me tell you how to organize this drill.

Start with marking out a square of about 20 yards by 20 yards. The size of this square will vary depending on the number of players, and their age.

The number of players on each side of the square should be the same. Every player should stand towards the inner side of the square and should have a ball of their own.

When the coach whistles , every player will dribble the ball to the opposite side and stop on the line opposite to them. This is better than the rest of the free soccer drills because this coaches the players to dribble across the square with their heads up and at the same time not disturbing the other player’s movement in the square.

This drill adds more fun when the players are asked to dribble across the square and back again making them to turn 180 degrees with the ball. The number of times the players have to dribble the ball need not be constant and that can be varying. At end of every run, a player is eliminated and this continues until only one player is left.

Its good not to ask the players to dribble the ball but to run with the ball , when the players are only a few.

Coaching the kids of the vital techniques of ball dribbling is truly a great fun. One way of making soccer drills interesting is mixing a whole lot of them; some tough and some light. And it is okay if some are not directly related to soccer and are only meant to have fun.

In soccer coaching, it is also important to realize that kids should not do too much of anything.

So you want to control the ball either to shoot or to pass, then what you must master is the free soccer drills. Various kinds of soccer exercises guarantee proper execution of this skill.

What part of the ball should be applied force by the player? Both are equally important : Which part of the head applies force and What force do other parts produce. Answering these questions correctly will help the player to hit the ball where he wanted to.

For instance, to hit the ball to the ground, players will strike the ball with the downward motion of the forehead. The amount of force that a player should use on the ball is determined by how far the ball must travel after contact.

During soccer practice, the player’s position with respect to the ball and position of the ball in relation to the player help in determining the most suitable heading techniques. For instance, players in the defensive third generally head the ball high and wide, away from the goal.

Soccer Drills

Similarly, players in the midfield play the ball more precisely as they are often trying to head it to the attacking players.

To head the ball, the players should overcome the fear of being hit by the ball in the face. It is necessary to address this concern by using a sponge type ball, free soccer drills uses it.

To reduce fear, some cases mandate to use a slightly larger and lighter ball like a beach ball. Soccer Coaches teach the heading skills by positioning the players on their knees to ensure proper balance of the lower body. When the players have proper balance of the lower body, they concentrate on the action of the upper body.

When the players are skilled enough in heading the ball in kneel down positions, they can move on to the next level – heading in the standing position. These skills from the soccer coaching help the players to realize the contributions of the lower body in the heading.

Then comes the tapping of the ball with a other player, first in a fixed position then in motion. Players are challenged to jump and head the ball with the help of a one-foot take off, When they are more confident. Challenge them by offering heading drills with subtle and game-like defensive pressure.

Another step towards adding more structure to the game and developing intentional play is to refine the heading skills.

Do yourself a favor and incorporate free soccer drills that do not initially use a ball. And this helps young players to gain confidence in their moving skills without having to control the ball. Players should be challenged with the ball only when they are competent with the moving skills.

This is an easy way to explain the role of free soccer drills to the players. Rules are followed. Since you are the coach you can devise your own innovative drills.

For your own specific requirements the existing soccer exercises can be altered. For starters I have shared my experiences for forming a creative soccer training program.

Your plan should be accommodative. It is natural that all your plans may not work out as desired. It may rain, the kids may not turn up, or you may get sick. All these are possible obstructers so make enough arrangements to cover them.

It works well to have several soccer practice games ready. If there is any delay in executing the plan you can go to the next item by deleting it. Go through the motions and you can figure out what works best with the kids.

Soccer Drills

Prior warm up before any practice session is a must. The kids should use both regular soccer drills for warming up and also the soccer ball. Make the kids kick the ball back and forth apart from rotating the balls between their feet.

For warm up activity there are plenty of free soccer drills available which are fun too.

A soccer ball is made available to each of the soccer player. Using the ball the players planning should be done for many individual activities. The players should involve in activities such as shooting, dribbling and hitting the ball against the wall etc. Avoid using any lines or marks with a view to keep the movement free as far as possible.

In soccer coaching, after the individual activities are over, involve the players in some group activities. For example; passing and receiving the ball are fun drills to practice. Make the kids play soccer grouped into team without a goalkeeper. The players should be allowed to hit the goals without setting them any boundaries.

The players should be taught to defend after learning to attack. The players will learn a lot of individualistic skills in this coaching style.

It is mandatory the kids are grouped together as a team in group activities. The kids take up some time to adjust from individual to group activities to learn the concept of team play. The nature of interaction between coach and the players should be that of guidance only.

Make them realize the concept of interdependence to win matches. The drill ingrains the knowledge of playing as a group without doing much with the ball and to practice in a limited area.

Handling soccer exercise in this way is the easiest. Be innovative and integrate different free soccer drills which will be helpful to the kids to learn.

Dealing with mistakes and failure is another area in coaching high school soccer, for which the coach is solely responsible. How coaches react to failure decides the player’s motivation and his desire to towards correcting the mistakes. There are two choices available to the coach.

One of the choices can be employing the failure as a prospect to provide advice and guiding the players towards their improvement. The players should be persuaded to recommit themselves to the challenge with improved inspiration.

The player’s dearth and attestation that he cannot meet the expectations can be used as an evidence of failure. This poignant overreaction will de-motivate the players.

Players can be made psychologically strong by accommodating the accountability for their judgment, stances, and actions and rejecting all probable excuses. In soccer coaching, players can be questioned and listened by the coaches rather than always being accused of their mistakes. They should be encouraged to talk about what they could have done better.

This exercise is known as self-reference. The coach can take part in this by always encouraging the players to self reference. The coach can discuss the situation by asking the players their reaction rather than giving them a definition of the situation. “How do you feel you played?” or “Why do you feel you behaved that way?” can be taken as references.

The players should think all the way through and account for his or her version of reactions which are a fundamental part of the learning process.

Like any other sport, in coaching high school soccer too, confidence is the prerequisite that each players need to discover and instill in him or herself to get successful. You tend to spot the player’s weakness in terms of less confidence to cope with a situation whenever you use the term “pressure” in the game. The reason being that confidence alone can ensure success.

Confidence again is a matter of choice and only a player can make this choice. In the course of coaching youth soccer, this point can be made clear to them by describing the behavior of two parrots that sit on either shoulder.

Out of the two, one has a positive behavior and he keeps telling the player to face the challenges head on by saying “You can do it.” The other is the negative parrot, constantly warning the player “You can’t do this.” And clearly they have to choose which parrot to listen to.

Once the choice has been made, teach them to take responsibility for their actions. And this may be an everyday decision. Build confidence in the players by emphasizing their involvement in past successes and ready successful players to make a strong team.

Coaching Youth Soccer

Teach your players during soccer coaching that holding someone or something else responsible is a symbol of insecurity. In fact they should be taught to see setbacks as a part of the learning curve and not let it shake their confidence.

Also, in coaching high school soccer, the players should learn by heart the phrase “I’ll get the next one” to keep them going whenever they lose any opportunity.
Thus, confidence for the next strike is remains unaffected because of the distress of the miss.

In a team, caliber, mental strength and judgments regarding a player’s ability to survive the demands of competition, hold the key for its success. Judging mental readiness is often a bit tougher challenge than judging physical readiness in football coaching.

To make such judgments easy, there is a need of searching clear messages. It is necessary to deeply go through the player’s spoken and unspoken messages about his or her knack to succeed in the game.

Majority of coaches in soccer coaching are the players who used to play the game in their younger days. Then also they have to face a number of issues while coaching young players. • Communicate the potential issues that could arise and have a solution ready.
