Soccer Coaching Drills

Imagine a scenario where 50% of the soccer coaching drills should adopt development of trapping skills as their focal point. You would probably dismiss it as a fancy. But interestingly, researchers say that trapping, besides dribbling and passing is mainly responsible for consistently winning matches.

Trapping is the ability of the players to intercept the ball and then keep it near their body. Soccer exercises like these let the players use their feet, chest and thighs for this.

It is imperative that your players know how to trap the ball. If not, they will never really be in control of the game because everything else comes after trapping the ball. Trapping skills of the players can be enhanced by following the ways mentioned here.

Involve the Feet: Primarily, the coach must teach the players to use their feet in tackling the ball. Particularly in kids soccer drills, teach the kids to use inside of their foot. This is because the inside area of the foot id wide and very useful in engaging with the ball.

Soccer Drills

In soccer coaching drills, players can be taught to use the instep or crown of the foot along with entire foot when the players are senior and established. In cases where the ball bounces a lot, it is best to make them use their shin or ankle to tackle the ball.

Thigh Movement: Using your thigh to control rapid and bouncy ball is an excellent approach. Train the players to stop the ball with one thigh, get stable using the other, after getting in front of the ball. It is important to learn that as soon as the ball meets the thigh, the knee should be dropped so that the ball drops right there and does not move away from the player.

This activity has to be practiced regularly in order to become an expert at it by first using the knee to catch the ball and then bringing the knee down to prevent it from getting away.

Use the Chest: Just like the thigh, chest too has a vital role to play in trapping the ball flying high in the air. Teach your players to tackle the ball using their chest by getting in front of the ball and take their chest out. This will have the effect of breaking the ball’s speed and tumbling it down immediately.

But make sure that in soccer training drills, this technique should not be rigorously taught to the young players. It is very typical of them to use their hands while trying to stop the ball with the chest. It could be troublesome because the kids might get accustomed to using their hands to catch the ball.

Now its time to start putting these soccer coaching drills into action. Ensure that the players increasingly practice these. By subscribing to our youth soccer coaching community, keep yourself updated on the latest in the field.

Soccer Scholarships – 5 Tips to Beat outermost the assignation

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Soccer scholarships are getting harder to get every season. As soccer continues to grow in popularity each year, there is supplementary competition through the sparse number of scholarships for NCAA, NAIA also NJCAA colleges and universities. The good news is, if you are willing to put in as much or more effort towards your recruiting and scholarship search, as you do on the field, then you can guarantee your self success.

Here are 5 tips to separate yourself from the competition:

1. Olympic Development Program (ODP) Each state and region has an Olympic development program for soccer. Most athletes are offered soccer scholarships from these teams. While you also must play on your high school team, the competition has become so intense that college coaches almost exclusively recruit from these leagues.
2. Academic Grades I know you must hear this everywhere but it can not be emphasized enough. Just having a GPA below 3.0, excludes yourself from being recruited at almost 50% of NCAA schools. Gone are the days when an athlete could just meet minimum NCAA academic standards. You must also meet minimum admissions standards for the college. Do not lose out to another athlete because of your grades. There is no excuse anymore for this one.
3. staunch upgrowth Coaches want a player that can stand up to the unhappiness of the collegiate game. Do you lose your head when your team loses or gets scored on? Do you change your style of play, get weaker as the match goes on? Coaches are watching and you must be able to maintain your performance under pressure and losing situations.
4. Athletic Range Are you able and willing to play more than one position? Have you already peaked in high school or would you get better under a collegiate soccer program’s coaching and resources? Coaches desire players who are willing to reach whatever the team needs. They also want players who guilt continue to polish and grow as a player throughout their college playing specialty.
5. Financial Ability Is your family willing to pay tuition combined with athletic aid from a college? Soccer is a “equivalency” sport in the NCAA. Most scholarships are only partial and seldom do we see actual full-rides for soccer. Communicate to the coach that you are willing and able to pay to go to college here to cover the rest of the tuition. Coaches do not want to haggle or waste time with athletes who are not serious about attending if they do not get a full-ride.

Use these five tips to start developing your recruiting plan. With the number of high school soccer players and increasing number of foreign students also getting recruiting for soccer scholarships, you need to start early and start fast. A solid plan can help you overcome obstacles to your scholarship search and place you above the competition.

Is Alex Fegusons Experiment Working

Monday, December 28th, 2009

The move of Michael Owen from Newcastle United to Manchester last Summer was unexpected and surprising, mainly due to Michael’s injury prone history.

Many experts were left confused by the decision of Sir Alex Ferguson. After Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer the generally accepted view was that a star would jump into the Manchester United jersey to take over for him. Instead, United got Luis Valencia from Wigan and Michael Owen. A player who has been struggling with fitness and form over the last five years along with more injuries than one can count. To make matters worse of course, he is a former Liverpool player. There were a few bemused faces around Old Trafford the day the deal was announced.

When the finer details of the agreement were released it became apparent that Alex Ferguson knew what he was doing. Michael Owen is signed on a pay if you play contract at Manchester United and he was intended to be used from the bench. He did not have to hold the whole team up with his striking abilities, he is being used from the bench when the team needs him.

Only managing to play in a few games as a late substitute it was not the start the Michael Owen would have wanted. Michael Owen’s last minute goal against Manchester City showed the role Alex Ferguson had planned for him in the team. This goal was expected to kick start more involvement from Owen in the team, their was even talk about a place in the England soccer team if he could find consistent goals.

Owen has not managed to continue his form however. Only managing to score four goals from eighteen games this season (many of which he only appeared as a substitute however), Doubt is starting to spread on Alex Fergusons decision to transfer Michael Owen and how long he has left in the team.

Owen’s chances of regaining a place in the England team are getting slimmer by the day it seems. Fabio Capello has repeatedly reiterated the need for players to be fit and playing regularly in order to play.Over the past few years Owen  has managed to be neither of these things. However it should be noted here that Capello doesn’t seem to extend this mantra to other England strikers, Emile Heskey looks like a certainty in the team regardless of his performance at Aston Villa.

The high point of the experiment so far has been Owen’s last minute goal against City.Owen needs to find goals and consistency over the remainder of the season or it seems unlikely that Alex Ferguson will continue his experiment onto the next season, much in the way youngster Darron Gibson is doing. Whether Owen has the ability and level of fitness to do that remains questionable and as such, it seems likely that Sir Alex’s gamble, in the long run, may not pay off.
