There are 6 factors; parents, coaches, excitement, selection, time and success windows which are required for an effective youth coaching philosophy.
Consistent Parental Support: When we talk about soccer training the influence of parents is vital in the mental and physical development of your players, most importantly on the day the match is taking place. It’s not enough just to provide the parents with the brochure, “parental responsibilities” at the beginning of the term. Regular meetings should be arranged with the parents to highlight the key points again and discuss issues.
Future soccer coaches: A vital part of your philosophy should not just focus on developing the players, but also the coaches. Assess and see if you can turn one of your kid’s parents into a soccer coach? They are the ideal candidates, not necessarily to start immediately, but may be in the future.
Selection: One of the biggest reasons why players with great soccer skills drop out is non-selection. Studies reveal, that the players think that they would not get selected for a good team so they opt for a bad team. Hence, a fair selection system should be used so that all the players are given equal game time.
Time: The session should be started on time and the parents should also be told to be on time. When the start times and finish times are clearly defined, you can execute the session very well.
Excitement: Is it a must that each soccer coaching session is interesting? Make an effort to make each session an enjoyable one but do not forget that it is not possible to each session like that. Therefore, go for a positive attitude as an alternative.
When you train the kids, it is perfectly natural that coaches have problems coming up with different ideas on how to make sessions fun. As such, the biggest hurdle that the coaches face is with regard to the creativity aspect of coming up with fun drills every now and then.
In soccer drills, keep increasing the level of difficulty for the player’s to grow. One way of doing this is to start with a game, identify a problem and then eliminate it by performing a related soccer drill.
Success windows: Try and incorporate a “success window” for the season as a significant element in your training sessions. This needs you to determine a lower limit and an upper limit of time with a view to measure the level of success that needs to be achieved.
As an example, time frame of minimum four and maximum eight weeks. This can be worked out for both the team and individual members.
